Big Law Firms Expand Alumni Programs, Taking Cues from Consulting Industry.

Large law firms are enhancing their alumni programs by incorporating elements from consulting firms' playbooks. Kirkland & Ellis and A&O Shearman have developed more structured and robust alumni networks, which have become integral to their firms' identities. These programs now include dedicated websites, events, career development resources, and coaches.

The expanded alumni networks serve as significant talent and business tools for law firms. Chiara Wrocinski, chief administrative officer at Kirkland & Ellis, highlights the business development and retention benefits of these programs. The firm's alumni network, inspired by management consulting firms, offers networking opportunities, career guidance, and learning experiences for current and former employees.

A&O Shearman has also looked to management consultancy firms for insights into operating their alumni network. Boyan Wells, co-chair of A&O Shearman's alumni team, notes that law firms are recognizing the importance of maintaining positive relationships with former employees, especially as attorney mobility increases.

Both firms have implemented various initiatives, including alumni advisory boards, global events, and structured approaches to matching talent with client vacancies. Kirkland & Ellis has launched a CareerLink Initiative and offers workshops to help attorneys develop client service skills or prepare for in-house transitions.
