Freshfields Considers Expansion to Texas and Boston as US Drives Firm's Growth.
Freshfields, a UK-founded law firm, is exploring potential expansion into Texas and Boston as part of its continued growth strategy in the United States. The firm's US operations have been its primary growth engine in recent years, with revenue increasing by £137 million from 2021 to 2023, accounting for 87% of the firm's overall growth during that period. Freshfields has doubled its US headcount over the past five years, now boasting more than 90 partners and around 500 lawyers in the country.
The firm's success in the US market has been particularly notable in Silicon Valley, where it launched an office in 2020. This expansion has allowed Freshfields to build a strong roster of tech clients, including Google, Palantir, HP, and Instacart. The firm's reputation for antitrust work has also paired well with its push into the tech industry, as US regulators increasingly scrutinize major tech companies.
Freshfields has been actively recruiting partners from top US firms on both coasts and has recently focused on bolstering its asset management practice. The firm's senior partner, Georgia Dawson, emphasizes that while US growth is a priority, there is a clear understanding within the partnership that European investment must accompany this expansion.
